This is a really tough section. I managed to get twisted around in a meadow as the tread is light and signage scarce. Caught up to the fast four hikers. As Ley mentions, the ridge walk is a calf burner. Being up high, dry, and without shade the rolling ridge is tough. I took the official trail (rather than dropping down to Modoc) and it was pretty good. There is a creek once you drop down. Slept right next to the fence separating the cattle from the government property.
