Day 1

Got to the trailhead at around 9 AM. The shuttle service out here was
jarring to say the least. I figure in a day or two my insides will
reattach. Actually it was a nice ride just a little too 4 wheel - rough
road for my tastes. The trail is high desert at around 4800 feet and
mostly creosote bushes. I think there were 3 shady spots all day and I
stopped and used them all. Most of the day I ended up hiking around or
near Larry and Ellen as we were traveling the same speed. I was pleasantly
surprised at how well marked the trail has been so far. Except for one
portion late in the day it has been pretty easy to follow the trail. The
last section seemed to disappear into nothing over and over again so I
headed to the road that parallels the trail and took that as I was getting
too scratched up bushwhacking through the desert. I'll be on the road until
mid day tomorrow. This is a 4 wheel drive only road and I think it gets
about 1 car a day, at most. There were two water sources today one at about 2 miles
from the start which I didn't need and one about 14 miles in which I used.
I am about 8 to 10 miles from the next one tomorrow. It was warm and sunny
and even though I was mostly covered I think I may have gotten a little sun
burned. I'll know for sure tomorrow. I am cowboy camping (sleeping under
the stars) just off the road. The sun just set and it looks like it will
be a nice night - probably in the 50's. I hiked 17 miles today and that
was with a late start so I am pretty tired. Luckily the trail wasn't too
hard and there was a slight breeze for a lot of the day. It s going to
take a bit before I get into hiker shape.
