Hiking out

Day 18

We 'slept in' until 6! It actually got quite cold by morning, colder than it had been at 9000 feet. I guess we were in a bit of a hold that captured the cold air dropping off the mountains.

A quick pack up and onto trail. We continued to drop thru pinyon and juniper forest. There were sandy grass patches seen on either side. A few more barbed wire fences to navigate.

Then we were on dirt road until the highway. Of course, there were a few hills thrown in. We planned to meet a shuttle, so we were pushing the pace a bit. I would have liked to detour to the Aragon Tank, which is supposed to have great water with goldfish in it!

Our ride was waiting for us, unloading a hiker who was resuming his walk to Pie Town. We had a pleasant ride to Reserve.

After 9 days without a break, we plan to take a couple of days to clean up and eat!

We stopped for a meal at Ella's Caf in Reserve. Great food, very reasonable prices. The waitress was cheerful and entertaining. Her comment on the fire: 'the Forest Service is treating it like a prescribed burn now. They used to call it a controlled burn, but with these winds, they can't control anything!'
