Oakland, California to Whitefish, Montana
We left Oakland, Thursday, July 16. Our son, Sam had flown in that morning from Eugene, Oregon and after reviewing his gear and adding some things that he didn’t have, we took off on our grand adventure. It took us two and a half days by car to get to Whitefish, Montana from where we launched our journey. We drove straight to Apgar Ranger Station on the West side of Glacier Park to straighten out some of the camping details we had not been able to arrange by phone. A very nice woman ranger completely reworked the scheduled campsites for us, slowing the journey down (10-15 miles a day) and reassuring us of relaxed pace at the start of our hike. We were on vacation, and we didn’t need to rush through this incredibly beautiful and geologically interesting part of the hike. After that she showed us “the bear video” from which we learned that deer, elk and other ungulates steal shoes and hiking poles for the salt. This was news to us and proved prophetic! These arrangements took a couple of hours and we were glad to have everything sorted out for the next day.
After leaving the ranger station, we drove straight to the home of Tony and Marylou whom we had never met. Tony would soon be Kerry’s stepbrother when his Dad, Jack married Tony’s mother, Libby at the end of August. Tony and his family were very gracious to take us in that night and then take us to the trailhead the next day.
