Second Zero in Rawlins, Wyoming

Our town chores, particularly visiting the Post Office, took us on a 1.5 mile walk into downtown Rawlins. We spent the rest of the morning on a guided tour through the old Wyoming Frontier Prison, one of whose highlights were disturbingly focused on the two means of execution used in Wyoming - hanging and lethal gas. The conditions were humane for their time, but really quite appalling now. Still, seeing the cells and hearing the inmates stories does provide an interesting insight into this frontier region.

We then moved on to the highlight of the day - the Carbon County Fair - which started today. Despite fliers and web site declarations, when we walked to the fairgrounds there was absolutely nothing there. Disappointed that I would not see farm animals, and more importantly, eat a corndog and ice cream on a stick, we regrouped at a restaurant downtown for a great lunch and returned to our hotel for a relaxing afternoon. Tomorrow, walking through the Great Divide basin/desert, I will be glad we had the rest.
