Weight Loss Program Success
As I wrote back in the beginning of December, I have been striving to decrease my pack weight. My goal had been to lose about a quarter of the base weight that I was carrying in my backpack. As I mentioned back then, my base weight has been roughly 13.5 pounds since I started long-distance backpacking. (Again, base weight is the weight of all the non-consumables I carry in my pack plus the weight of the pack itself.)
So today I finally sat down and made out a comprehensive gear list for my CDT trek. And, after careful selection, modification, and substitution of gear, I have a pack weight of 9.86 pounds! That is over a 25% reduction in weight, which I have to admit I'm pretty stoked about. (If you’re interested is viewing my Gear List just click the link in the yellow box to the left of this text.)
Now I know that there will be an item here or there that I will feel the need to take, and this 9.86 pounds will probably grow a little bit. But I’ve accounted for all the really heavy stuff, so it's only likely to get a few ounces heavier.
Of course, at most, when I am fully loaded with food for 5 days and 5L of water, the pack weight will be 28 pounds. Since the pack I’m using is rated to 30 pounds I’m still good. Also, I’ve been training with the pack loaded to about 28 lbs now for a few weeks and it handles quite well.
Speaking of training, on my 12 miles today I heard a frog chorus for the first time since Fall last year. Spring must be on its way.
