Silverthorne
Copper Mnt
I am connecting the Colorado Trail that I hiked in 2011 with the CDT via the Silverthorne alternate. I flew into Denver and got a shuttle to the Air BnB I stayed at in Silverthorne. I spent a day getting used to the elevation and making sure I had everything I needed (there is an REI in Silverthorne/Dillon). Silverthorne is easy to walk around in. I took the free Summit County bus from Silverthorne to Copper Mntn ski area. Went up the Gore Range trail. Have to take it slow, elevation at home is only 2000 ft.and will go to 12000. A marmot came up to within 2 feet of me during a lunch siesta. "I have nothing for you", I told him. He waddled away and joined 4 others before I could deploy my camera. About 18 hikers on the trail. Lots of wildflowers. The actual trail into the Tenmile Creek drainage is way off the Bear Creek waypoints--the waypoints seem to have been gotten not from someone with a GPS actually walking the trail, but from a map. Trails marked on maps are often not where the trail actually is on the ground--trail builders change their minds as they actually build the trail and what was the route printed on the map was just wishful thinking of the land management planners. I am experimenting with less snack bars this trip. Maybe I will actually get hungry. No more hiker hunger for me as I age, too much bodyfat and fine tuned metabolism. Lots of noise from planes overhead--so much for wilderness.
