Muddy Pass Lake

Into Steamboat and Hospital

I decided not to hitchike into town--I hate hitchhiking--so I called GoAlpine shuttle based in Steamboat Springs. Driver Jon picked me up at Muddy Pass Lake next to the hwy. He said he would be able to give me a ride back up to the trail on Saturday. At this point I was planning on this as a regular re-supply, then get back to hiking. But fate "punched me in the face" as Brian the Hobbit Guy's t-shirt pointed out. I got to the Rabbit Ears Motel and called the nurse line from my insurance company. I was trying to decide whether I should go to an urgent care facility or the hospital emergency room. She recommended going to the hospital because the emergency room could schedule me to see an eye doctor right away and the urgent care couldn't. I am so blessed the Yampa Valley Medical Center was in Steamboat Springs. I took the free shuttle that runs through town and got into see a doctor right away. They referred me to an opthalmologist for an appointment that afternoon. Helm Eye center got me in as the last patient of the day and did a thorough check, including an eye dilation. I had an ongoing posterior vitreous detachment in my left eye. Although 85% of people going through this ordinary process of old age don't have any complications (50% have no symptoms at all) about 15% will develop a complication, most often a torn retina. The best way forward is to be within 24 hours of a doctor for 3-8 weeks. Backpacking through Encampment, Wyoming won't fit this description. And if it happens on the trail I wouldn't be able to fly for two weeks for the retinal tear surgery to heal. As the cliche goes--the trail isn't going anywhere, but I can't take a chance on losing my eyesight. So I decided to fly home, get checked out by my own eye doctor and monitor the situation until it stabilizes.
