New Puff Jacket Project
Back in February 2016 I was preparing to hike the Colorado Trail. In reviewing my gear at that time I realized my insulated jacket was not insulating much anymore. I couldnt find an equivalent jacket weighing 10.5 ounces, so I decided to re-insulate my old jacket.
Ripping open that old jacket, removing all the insulation, cutting new insulation to size, installing the insulation, and reassembling the jacket was a good, if nerve-racking, experience. It gave me confidence enough to go on and create several sewing projects including a wind jacket for the CDT this year. And I continue to use my insulated jacket, or puff as I like to call it.
This brings us back to the present day. My puff has been with me over thousands of miles and hundreds of days and is much the worse for the wear. As the fabric is starting to deteriorate, I've decided to make a whole new jacket using the old one as a template. To that end I have purchased new fabric and new insulation and I am working on making a pattern.
Hopefully I can get this finished in the next few weeks and have a chance to test it out this winter before bringing it on the trail. My fallback position, if it doesn't work out, is to purchase one of the ultralight, but very pricey jackets that have recently hit the market.
One way or the other I should have a new puff jacket for the next leg of the CDT.
