Posing during our driveby of Wolf Creek Pass

One Last Zero in Creede, Colorado

One Last Zero in Creede, Colorado
We got up this morning, packed up the car, and drove three minutes to a dental office in Gallup, New Mexico. Eating lunch our first day on the road, I chipped a tooth. It wasnt painful, but it was very annoying. I had called over a dozen dentists in Flagstaff hoping to get an appointment with no luck, but Two Step made one call to a dentist in Gallup, and I was set with an 8:30am appointment. The dentist was young, competent, and very understanding, and we were back on the road with my tooth filled by 9:30am. Yeah!
We had an uneventful morning drive through the backroads of New Mexico and soon passed into the backroads of Colorado. We finally got our first look at some high mountains, and were relieved to see only small patches of snow on the highest peaks. Our snow phobia was abated as we drove further into the Colorado Rockies. We stopped for lunch in Pagosa Springs, one of our more memorable town stops on our 2017 CDT hike. We had spent nearly four days here recovering from Two Steps severe snow abrasion and had eaten in all the downtown establishments. Although there were many we had enjoyed, we chose to stop on the edge of town, a few miles away from the main downtown area and basically inaccessible to car-less hikers, at the Pagosa Brewery and Grill. We had a real lunch treat in the Salted Caramel Porter, and I had the salmon fish and chips - the best fish n chips Ive ever tasted.
We soon were driving through Pagosa Springs remembering all our special times in this scenic town, and then we headed up the climb to Wolf Creek Pass. At the top, we stopped and took pictures - for tomorrow we will be in a hurry to depart on the CDT from this location. But today we were soon back on the road, driving another forty miles to Creede, Colorado. We are staying at the Cascada Cabins in Creede tonight, and the owner has graciously agreed to allow us to leave our car in the parking lot between the cabins and their Cascada Bar and Grill for the next eleven days. During those days we will hike a loop through the San Juan range of the Rockies and return back to Creede.
After a short walk through the small downtown of Creede, and then a scrumptious dinner the Cascada Bar and Grill, it was time to call it an early night. Tomorrow at 7:00am we have a ride scheduled to take us back to Wolf Creek Pass for the start of this years backpacking adventure.

From the CDT,
