Continental Divide Trail Map

Travel to trail (day 1)

First travel day to the trail.?? Today I made it to Spokane WA via Chicago.?? The flights were uneventful.?? Once in Spokane I took the bus from the airport to downtown and then headed to the post office to pick up a package that I had mailed to myself.?? The package contained things I wasn't allowed to bring on the airplane.?? Fuel for my stove, bug spray, matches, and an air horn. The air horn is to scare away brown bears.?? I am hoping I don't need to use it.
I had a few errands to do in Spokane today and boy was it hot.?? It was really, really hot today. It made walking around downtown Spokane a challenge.?? The train station is pretty much abondonded during the day.?? I got all my errands done and headed back to wait there as it was cool.?? I was checked out by a cop to make sure I wasn't one of the local homebums trying to use the train station to crash.?? I was checked on by cops 3 times on the Florida Trail but never on a Western trail before.?? But actually I am not on the trail yet and I still look pretty presentable so I'm not sure this one really counts.?? The train/bus station is not in the nicest part of downtown so there are a fair number of homeless around.?? Not sure how they are coping with this heat - it seems most are just finding a shady spot to crash for the day.
I found a local brewery not too far from the train station so I am currently enjoying a nice cold honey blond beer at Black Label Brewing Company.?? I will then have an IPA then head back to the train station for the long wait for the train. There is only one train a day to Glacier and it leaves here at 1:30 in the morning and gets into East Glacier at around 10 in the morning.?? I plan to sleep on the train.?? I hope to get to the trail head by tomorow evening.?? We will see as I haven't totally figured out how I am getting to the trailhead and I have to get my camping permits straightened out too.?? Should be an interesting day tomorow.
