Fires and Food
There are now 5 fires burning on or around the 300 miles of CDT that I want to hike in SW Montana. The Trail Creek fire still is the biggest at 24,000 acres. The Black Mtn fire is a thousand acres south of Trail Creek. The Haynes fire is SW of the Black Mtn fire on the west side of the divide. Meanwhile Highway 43 into Wisdom, MT ( the town the CDT fire bypass route passes through ) has two fires that could close the road, the Christensen Fire and the bigger Alder Creek fire. This is not counting the Hays Creek fire burning just west of Glacier.
Fortunately the smoke predictions along the CDT are only in the moderately bad range so far. And it has occurred to me that I will start out my hike this year by hiking toward a 24 thousand acre wildfire. Does this sound a little unsettling to anyone other than me? But, the journey is the reward.
I have finished putting my food together for my trip. It is all portioned and packed and I will keep it in smell proof bags during the hike. I am using Nylofume bags, which were designed for the fumigation industry to keep poisons off houseware when fumigating a house. They are super lightweight and highly odor proof. Hopefully this will keep bears and rodents from becoming interested in the contents.
With food and fuel for 6 days, and a liter of water, my loaded pack comes in at just under 26 lb. which is respectable. I should be able to carry that. Lastly, this week will be devoted to finishing up all the little last minute tasks and obsessing on the Montana fires.
Until next time
