Florida Trail Map

Flooded trail ends my hike.

Saturday, February 06, 2010

ll of my previous plans for the remainder of my 2010 FT NOBO thru-hike were dashed when we got to the RV park yesterday and I used their Wi-Fi connection to check out the FTA website. After plowing my way through deep standing water for days, I must admit that I wasn't all that surprised by what I learned. Thus, due to the recent heavy rains in Georgia, Florida and other southern states, essentially all of the rivers (and/or their feeder side streams) that I was scheduled to visit on the remainder of my FT thru-hike were now dangerously flooded and large sections of the trail were now closed. This reasonable caution was now of course forcing all potential "thru-hikers" to use a variety of paved road walk detours to by-pass the flooded sections in order to reach the northern termini of the FT.

What fun is that? Why should I by-pass the very scenery that I have been hiking for over a month to see? Especially when I live such a short distance away and thus it would be relatively easy for me to resume my hike in some future year when the water levels were more favorable and I could actually explore the Suwannee, Econfina, Alapaha, Withlacoochee, Aucilla and other scenic rivers.

So it is with great reluctance that I have decided to terminate my attempt at completing an FT thru-hike for at least another year.

On the bright side, at least by my going home nearly a month before I had originally planned, I would now have that much more time to plan, prepare and dream about my mid-April departure for an attempt at a NOBO thru-hike of the 3,000-mile Continental Divide Trail. So for those who are interested in following my subsequent adventures in 2010, I suggest you now check out my CDT listing.

Best wishes to all and the very best of luck to anyone (Racheopod?) who is still out there trying to complete the rest of the FT this year.
