Florida Trail Map

First day on trail

Head out to the trail abouy 10 AM and got to the trailhead at the Oasis
visitors center at 1 PM. It was sprinkling on and off a bit at the start.
I signed in with the rangers and got a camping permit and headed to the
trail. It started near an airfield which had a ton of herons at hte end.
I was able to get pretty close to them and at one point they mostly all
took off few for about 30 seconds and returned.

The trail was fifty percent muddy and fifty percent underwater. I was
surprised how much was underwater. It was mostly ankle deep water but many
times to mid calf and once in a while knee deep. It is a bit tricky to walk
through but I am starting to get the hang of it. You need to be careful of
your footing as a lot of the time you can't see the ground because it is
unerwater and murky. About 4 PM I ran into the first FT hikers, they were
in a tent trying too get out of the rain. I didn't get their names but may
run into them tomorrow. They were hard to miss as they pitched their tent
right in the middle of the trail. In the area they were in it was probably
the only dry spot arround. I hiked on another mile to 7 mile camp and
stopped here for the night. It was earlier than I wanted to stop but it
was raining pretty steadily and has not let up for the last couple of
hours. Hopefull most of this rain will blow out overnight.

The amount of water on the trail was a surprise. I thought the first day
was going to be mostly dry but I now expect the next two to be very wet
too. Don't know how long it takes to get trenchfoot but I suspect more
than 3 days and I will do my best to dry then each night.

The trail has been well marked so far and has a few blowdowns here and
there but they have been no problem to get around.

Just had to zip up my tent as a mosquito came buzzing in. I hadn't seen
any today but with all the water here I am not surprised. Luckily I got to
her before she got to me. My clothes are damp from the rain which is
steady for the moment and will probably go on for a few more hours. I'm
going to take it easy and quiet tonight and maybe I'll get an early start -
up with the sun is my goal.

It is getting dark - 6 PM, I wasn't really sure what time it got dark here
and with the rain I couldn't see the sun to make an estamate. Should be
able to get lots of sleep with the early dark and not much to do.
Hopefully the rain doesn't keep me up.
