Florida Trail Map

Swampy - day 2

I hiked about 16 miles today. That wasn't bad considering the trail
conditions. Met up with another thru hiker, Woodchuck at about 9 or 10 and
another thru hiker Snapper, at around lunch time. Everyone was heading for
Oak hill campground tonight as the trail is pretty slow going from about 2
miles before here until I-75 and the next not underwater spot is 4 more
miles and would be impossible to make in the daylight. As it is I haven't
seen Woodchuch here and its now 6:30 and completely dark. Sun goes down at
6. The hike was pretty wet most of the day. In the morning it was a lot
like yesterday with off and on again ankle deep wet areas. I rained all of
last night and didn't stop until maybe 11 this morning. Around one I saw
the sun for the first time since heading out but it was cloudy most of the
day until around 4 PM. The afternoon hiking was slower tha the morning as
the water was deeper. I went from ankle deep in the morning to knee deep
in the afternoon. The last 2 miles before the campsite had no spots that
weren't at least calf deep. Tomorrow the net 8 miles to I-75 are suppost
to be the same with a few streches waist deep. I think a mile or two after
I-75 I get out of the swamp. I suspect tomorrow will be the hardest day on
the trail with the slogging through deep water most of the day. As the
water gets deeper the milage goes down and the effort needed goes up.
It was cool most of the day as it was completely socked in most of the
day. When I woke up the rain was continuing and it was foggy everywhere.
The fog eventuall cleared and it warmed up a bit in the afternoon but
neaver really got warm - manybe in the low 60's at best. It looks like the
clouds may havve finally moved out just as the sun was setting so hopefully
tomorrow will be warm and sunny.
As you can imagine everything is pretty wet and muddy from the rain and
swamp crossing. There are lots of birds out here but I haven't seen much
else except frogs nd one grass snake.

I should get to my first resupply the day after tommorow, I was expecting
it to take days but the going is slower than I expected. I was carrying
some extra food so it should be a problem. Well at least ther is no
shortage of drinking water as I am walking through it all day long. I have
to make sure everything in my pack is water tight for tomorrow because I
suspect it will be getting wet. The guide says a lot of 'colorfull words'
get used in the section coming up. Well I think I'll get some sleep.
