Florida Trail Map

Out of St Marks

Had a very restfull night at Paul and Jans. They offered to let me stay
another night but I really wanted to get back to the trail. Paul gave me a
ride back to St Marks and i hit the only store in town, the dollar
general. I was able to get all tthe food for the next leg of the trip and
was back on the trail by 9 AM. For some reason dollar general has been the
usual resupply store available. And while I can easily make them work I
must admit I am looking forward to a full grocery store with a bigger
selection. Before I left Jan made me a couple of sandwitches which I
devoured by around 11 AM as i was starving for some reason.
The hike out of St Marks was a bit overgrown for the first couple of
miles and was what I call pseudo trail. It was trail in the woods but it
just followed a major roadway and was only about 30 feet away from it. So
you heard and mostly could see every car on the road anyway.
But after a couple of miles the trail left the highway and went back into
the St Marks wildlife refuge and the trail was very nice for the rest of
the morning.
By mid afternoon the trail came to a closure due to a bridge out and there
was a several mile roadwalk around the closure. The roadwalk was long but
not to hard and i took an additional detour to hit a bbq resturant and
grabbed dinner there. I was in a rush and let the waitress know I was
racing the rain and dark and needed to get back to the trail before they
both happened.
I ate quickly and hit the road and was back on the trail well before dark
and without rain. I got to the end of the refuge and set up my tent just
as the rain started. I had it all set up and was inside before more than a
few drops had come down. It is supposed to rain off and on for the next
two days. There is the steady pitter patter of rain on my tent as I write
this now and it should keep raining most of the night.
It was a good day of hiking but I was having a tough time of it an figure
out after dinner that I was just hungry all day.
I saw little wildlife today but the trail was pretty none the less.
