Tahoe Mike drops me at GET First Water Trailhead

The Beginning

Voice Journal Voice Journal

Thanks to Tahoe Mike fro the rides. I started hiking at about 11am. Yup, it was hot and getting hotter. There were lots of cars at the TH, maybe 20 or more. There were plenty of olks on their way out as I headed in. There were of course desert plants groing everywhere and almost no shade. This is tough for a guy coming from the cold woods and snows of New Hampshire. Yes, there were still some little patches of snow around my house and plenty in the White Mountains just a 45 minute ride north. It may have gotten up to 70 at my place one day. So, the 90s were hot. I managed to avoid getting burned that first day and made camp by the light of an ample moon at 7:40pm. Arizona doesn't believe in daylight savings time so it is 3 hours behind the east coast instead of the expected 2.

I was beat. I sat in the shad3e a few times on the way in. I tried to eat a Lara Bar but only managed a couple of bite. The heat really hurts my appitite. I didn't dring enough water either. You sweat lots but never see it as it evaporates immediately so I forget to drink! I'll get better at that.

For dinner I pounded down a box of Near East Cous Cous but it was too much in this heat. Hopefully that gets better too. Sleep probably came about 10. My poly-pro legs were too itchy so I had to sleep in my shorts. This is not the best way to keep the sunblock/dirt off the sleeping bag.

Untill next time!
