Grand Enchantment Trail Map

Preface

This journal has ostensibly been set up to chronicle my effort to walk the entire Grand Enchantment Trail, which wanders over 770 miles from roughly Phoenix, Arizona to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Of course, it may end up that this journal will document the fumbling wilderness missteps of a naive middle-aged man on an ill-advised journey.

Regardless of whether I complete 7 or 700 miles, I foremost owe thanks to both the person who scouted this trail and my family.

Brett Tucker pieced together the Grand Enchantment Trail and supplied all the necessary information to help people follow this route. Unlike platted and plotted popular trails (think Appalachian or Pacific Crest), this bold act of through-hiking chutzpah carved a route through Arizona and New Mexico. Mr. Tucker has done this and all the attendant work to support travelers such as my self. I suspect the financial rewards to him must amount to a negative $ 100 a week, so, since founding the trail in 2003, I calculate that Mr. Tucker has created almost negative $ 62,000 in personal wealth for himself. See you on Shark Tank, Brett. And thank you.

At a more powerful and personal level, I am indebted to my family for indulging me this trip. In addition to all she already does for our home and family, my long-suffering wife Helen must pick up my small role in the family PLUS as chief logistics officer for my trail support. Thank you!! Also, my daughters are owed thanks for their support and encouragement. Their helpful input of "gross, Dad!" and "eww" and "you're really going to wear that?" has made a profound impact on my plans and choices on accessorizing.

To manage expectations, I intend to gear this journal more for itinerant reports of the journey. My target audience is friends & family, but hopefully there will be some crumbs of useful data for future hikers. Lastly, consider yourself warned that when I was younger I missed some school days and apparently those days were the ones where they covered grammar and punctuation.

Thank you.

GET 2015

The Grand Enchantment Trail is a 730-mile wilderness walking route across the Southwest U.S., connecting mountains, deserts, canyons, and places of cultural and historic interest. Beginning in the Sonoran desert near Phoenix Arizona, the route meanders eastward, crossing unique and diverse Sky Island mountain ranges, deep and water-blessed desert canyons, the pine-studded Continental Divide, and toward the southernmost Rocky Mountains, where it descends dramatically to the outskirts of Albuquerque New Mexico at its distant terminus.
