To Eagle Creek

The hike through the Midnight Canyon wash was really cool. It's a short canyon that narrows with high walls and has old mortared steps from the original Safford-Morenci trail in it to help pack animals negotiate a pour-off area. The trail then follows a dirt road before switching back to single track to climb over Bellemeyer Saddle. There were great views of the area. The descent from the saddle wasn't hard to follow - certainly not for the GET but the way became "cobbly" and the guidebook warned "expect an exceedingly rocky go of it". Needless to say, we were making slow progress again and decided that we'd end our hike at Glenwood. We arrived at Eagle Creek later than hoped to start the 50+ fords in nine miles of the typically "ankle-to-shin deep in its lower reaches" creek. We were surprised how wide the creek was and that we were up to our knees in the first few fords. We were already unsure about the last two miles because they are described as "may be thigh-deep" and the final mile "rough and slow-going with deeper fords and occasional deadfall tangles due to flash flooding". We could feel the current pulling at us and the water was silty so that we could not see the bottom making for even slower crossings. At that point we decided to turn back and exit into Morenci/Clifton. We were not comfortable with negotiating the nine miles of creek safely with heavy packs on.
