Great Divide Route Map

I rode the 9 miles into Platoro this morning and loaded up on breakfast and lunch at the RV park, Golden Pan. The owner and employees were so nice to me, I'm excited to go back and eat their home cooking again! I knew the west complex fire was just ahead of me, but was crossing my fingers i could get through, it being a sunday we couldn't get a hold of the forest service and all the news from other travelers stopping in, was that elwood pass got burnt pretty good and i would have to ride right over it. So, the owners gave me a rerouted pass to travel over and get east into the San Luis Valley to go around the fire. The owners Michael and Debra allowed me to camp on their farm down in the valley that evening, so i bumped my way down a 31 mile washboarded forest service road all the way to their carport, where i spent the evening cherishing my newfound cell signal. I was pretty dirty after not enjoying a shower since Cuba, so i did a half day to Monte Vista where i resupplied, ate at DQ and headed towards the Movie Manor, a hotel built into a drive in theater. Unfortunately that evening i watched Fast 6, which I would call awful, but would do a disservice to the word, so lets just leave it at that.
That shower after 8 days was so well received that I'll put it in my personal pantheon of great showers, amongst the shower at lake morena last year at kickoff, cold night, long hot shower!
I rode into Del Norte the next afternoon and the met the 2nd place Tour Divide rider Jesse at the subway/convenience store, he was absolutely destroying a couple footlongs. He was on the record holder's pace, which means around 15 days 16 hours or so for the entire Divide! and he was only in 2nd place believe it or not. I heard later that Mike Hall won the race and shattered the record with a 14 day 12 hour ride to Mexico, these guys/girls are animals.

It was an uneventful 2 day ride into Salida, but i did ride righ out of canyon country into "true" Colorado just after Cochetopa pass, the humidity is now palpatable and although i'm sweating more because of it, i'm grateful for more access to natural water. The dry days are largely behind me! except for Wyoming's great basin, but I've adapted well to dry riding, so i'm not worried.
and who should i meet in Salida unexpectedly? Team Clusterf*@k, the same CDT hikers who i hung with in Pie town, their group had swelled by another 3 members, so now it was Trip, Virgo, Dayhiker, Cactus, Clutch, Tourist and Nicotine. Party Time! I also was able to stay with Kelly's family, I had met Kelly on the Southern Tier in Van Horn, TX as she struggled with a fierce headwind. Bubba B and I had just come back from kickoff and exploring the Carlsbad Caverns and so we trail magic'd her by buying her dinner. She took me around town to get my bike fixed up at Absolute Bikes (they know their stuff.) Dropped some serious money at their place buying new tires, but I'm so happy to have a fully functioning bike again!
After a couple days of relaxing and drinking, Cerveza came to pick me up and take me to Woodland Park to relax yet another couple of days outside of Colorado Springs, the view of Pike's Peak from her window was just stunning. We arrived on sunday and I met her boyfriend Michael, we were talking pike's peak when he mentioned that the hill climb was just ending that day! Ever since i was a kid i've had a infatuation with the hill climb, it's America's 2nd oldest motor sports event besides the Indy 500!
I was kicking myself for not planning my trip around the event, but i'm definitely going next year!
