Greater Patagonian Trail

Well, this year is turning out different than expected. I finished work March 2016, went to South America with my bike for 9 months and was promptly hit by a car and back at my parents. Unable to ride a bike but fine to walk I spent 2 months on the Appalachian Trail, then the Great Divide Trail, Wonderland Trail, Bigfoot Trail, Lowest to highest Route and I just got back from the Israel National Trail. So the year was still quite a success having hiked a number of really great trails.

I’ve had a good run at work the last few years but things are slow this winter apparently and they didn’t want me back so I’ll make the best of not working and not work. At this point I can’t envision working elsewhere and will just hope to be back in January 2018.

So now I’ll be going into my 2nd year of consecutive hiking which should be awesome. I was thinking of giving the bike ride another try, but then something else came up. Back in the summer, my old Hayduke Trail partner Skittles posted on Facebook his upcoming plans which included the Greater Patagonian Trail. Having never heard of this trail I immediately Googled it and found a brand new route created out of nowhere by some guy named Jan. It was very intriguing but back in the summer I assumed I’d be working the US winter which is the only time to hike down in Patagonia (well, without winter hiking involved). I moved it to the back of my mind, but as the year went on and it was looking less and less likely I’d be working it moved its way back forward. I started with seeing if Skittles wanted a partner (he did) and we went back and forth with seeing who would commit to not working first. We figured all that out and then booked flights to Santiago for January 5. Not where I expected to be, but very happy to be going.

Greater Patagonian Trail

The Greater Patagonian Trail is currently a 930 mile (1500 km) long trail route that leads you right through the heart of the legendary Patagonian Andes. It's a stunningly beautiful and diverse trail that crosses volcanic fields, idyllic Andean valleys, snow covered mountain ranges, lush green forests and deep blue lakes and rivers. Its creator, Jan Dudeck is extending the trail north to Santiago and south towards Tierra del Fuego for a route over 3,000 kilometers. Learn more:
