North Rim Lodge Dining Room
Revolt in the Desert
After a stony faced breakfast even though I had thoroughly prepared to leave on the trail that day, I looked out at the gray rocks on the Canyon Rim visible from the huge windows of the Lodge restaurant, and for a fleeting second, I thought it looked ugly--dare I say it. At that moment I decided not to go on. I finished my breakfast, mailed my surplus maps home and gave myself plenty of chances to change my mind as I did my pre-hike chores. I only felt dread when envisioning going forward on the trail. I could not convince myself of the beauty or the challenge--I've experienced plenty of those things in the past. This was different. I was done with the manic way I was approaching the trail and the hyped up logistical schedule, fueled by the "shark" mentality of hiking (move forward constantly or die) that drove everyday. Time to pull back and re-group and think about a way to hike this trail that gave the landscape the respect it deserved. And give myself as a 65 year old the respect I deserve. I reserved the cabin for another night and made arrangements with a Kanab shuttle service to get to Kanab, where a trail angel, Deena Farmer, would pick me up and take me back to my truck in Escalante.
