John Muir Trail Map

Map and Guidebook arrived!

Today my Tom Harrison map set arrived, as did the John Muir Trail guidebook from Wilderness Press. This is a brand new guidebook, and a preliminary view shows it to be far superior to the book I used to plan my 2006 hike. The book itself contains copies of the Tom Harrison maps, great profile maps, mileage tables, great info about the flora along the trail (Elizabeth Wenk is a botanist!), and it even includes UTM coordinates. I'll pour over the book in the coming weeks and provide a detailed review here.

After dinner my daughter and I talked about the trail for a while. Vivid memories from Mather Pass and Rae Lakes flooded back. I really can't wait to re-experience this great trail. I also just started reading a book entitled The Wild Trees by Richard Preston. It's about scientists who climb giant Coastal Redwoods in Northern California. This has me thinking about possibly taking a side trip to Muir Woods before heading up to Yosemite.

Here are a few things that I have decided already about this trip;

Also, yesterday during a 4 mile hike from our home to a place called Sunset Rock inside the Chickamauga Chattanooga National Military Park, Martha and I decided to try and do this hike 100 times between now and the start of the JMT hike. It is about a 1000' elevation gain in 2 miles and offers an excellent opportunity to train. Plus, all we have to do is walk out the door, and we're on the trail. Anyone, 1 hike down, 99 to go!
