Martha and me starting a hike on the Colorado Trail

New Gear

We had a nice Christmas. Martha went to Denver to be with her sister. While there she went snow shoeing twice and skiing once. She also came home with a new Gregory G Pack. My wife and I went to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to visit my Mom. I came home with an REI Cruise UL 60 pack. Each ofus plans to carry these packs during our JMT hike. For me, the new pack shaves about 3 pounds off my gear load. Towards the end of my JMT hike in 2006 I was lamenting carrying my fly rod and a few other luxury items, so this should help with my base pack weight.

Yesterday we drove 124 miles up to Brentwood, TN for REI's scratch & dent sale. Leaving Chattanooga at 5:45 AM, we arrived in the Nashville suburbs at 6:45 AM for the 7 AM opening. The fact that we're only about 20 minutes east of the Central Time Zone helped on the way up towards Nashville, but we lost that hour on the way back home. At the store Martha picked up a nice pair of Merrill Ventilator low cut boots for $ 25! We also found Bear Vault BV400 cannister of $ 19.83! It usually sells for $ 80. SOmeone obvioulsy bought it, used it, then took advantage of REI's liberal return policy to get their money back. We had hoped to find a lightweight thermarest and perhaps a sleeping bag at REI, but we were probably 300 deep in line, and those items were long gone once we got inside the store.

After leaving REI we had breakfast at Nashville's Pancake Pantry. Located near Vanderbilt University, this establishment reputedly has the best breakfast in Nashville. If that's the best breakfast in Nashville, nashville is not a good place for breakfast. I mean, the place was OK, but it wasn't great. Afterwards we went shopping at the local Whole Foods. Then we picked up some tickets for the 11:15 AM showing of Atonement (great flick!). Before the movie began I picked up a pair of New Balance 810 Trail Runners. I spent almost 2 hours looking for trail runners while in Myrtle Beach, and struck out. The New Balance Outlet in the Green Hills Mall had exactly what I wanted at a sale price of $ 59.95. I'll be training in these and wearing them next month when I hike 90 miles on the Florida Trail.

Today I hope to hike up to Sunset Rock for the 4th time this month, and I plan to do it again tomorrow.

Happy New Year to all!
