Day 4

I didn’t sleep well last night. I’ve decided to bail out here at Red’s Meadow. Before we turned in last night I told Chris what I was thinking about and that I would let him know for sure this morning. Today’s plan is for 13.9 miles with a 2,500’ climb and I don’t think I can do it. I ‘m still exhausted from yesterday and more than half my gear is still wet from the dip in the water. With the higher passes yet to come I think it’s prudent to call it quits and try again next year. We went down to Red’s Mule House café for breakfast and then packed our gear up. Chris headed out to find his way back to the JMT and went looking for the shuttle bus. There is a shuttle from Red’s to Mammoth Ski resort and there you can pick up the bus into town. My car is down at the Whitney Portal trailhead so my plan is to catch the CREST bus from Mammoth to Bishop and then Bishop to Lone Pine. My crib sheet says the only departure time southbound is at 8:05am so I took a room at the Best Western in Mammoth near the McDonalds where both YARTS and CREST make their pickups. I had to wait until 3 pm to check in so I took the bus back to the village and hung out at the Starbucks. After I got checked in I went to my room and got cleaned up. That really felt good. I had used Chris’s cell phone to call my wife in the morning so she knew that I had bailed at Red’s and would call later with my plans. When I called her at 4:15pm I had her go online to check the bus schedule to make sure I had my ducks in a row. Guess what? I didn’t realize that the CREST schedule I looked at left from Mammoth Mon-Fri mornings only and since this was Friday afternoon the next scheduled bus was not until Monday. My wife had called the CREST office and they told her that there was a different bus line called Mammoth Express that would leave at 5:15pm for Bishop so I quickly went down to check out and have them make reservations for me at Lone Pine. I caught the bus to Bishop and then got on the bus to Lone Pine. By 7:45pm I was in my room in Lone Pine. I called another number on my crib sheet for the Mt. Whitney Shuttle service to make arrangements to retrieve my car up at the Portal trailhead. He was going to be busy the next day so he said he could pick me up in 10 minutes and do it tonight, so that’s what I did.
