30 Day Countdown

I'm going to consider this my first journal entry. I had planned on having a few more journal entries by now, including a video of my gear, but never had a chance to figure it out. I've been very busy because life has thrown me one hell of a curve ball. On May 23, 2011, on my daughter's birthday, my mother was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and she only has a few months, possibly only weeks to live. I have been planning this trip for almost a year and the only thing that could have stopped me from doing it was an injury or a family tragedy. I can't believe that has happened! My mom is in hospice and we are providing around the clock care for her. I am living a life that requires that I focus on just one day at at time, sometimes only one moment at a time. The irony of marking a 30-day countdown given the circumstances has not escaped me. I am a planner, I love to plan and I can't plan my way out of this one. I just have to wait and see what life brings me and see how and what I do with it.

My hiking mates, Janet and Linda are being incredibly supportive. They understand I have to play things by ear and are picking up all of the last minute tasks that are so important, food planning, resupply, and transportation. I'm concentrating on the few pieces of gear I still need to get. Some are small, like an esbit stove, some are large, things that might unexpectedly be needed because of all the snow. I can't imagine giving up this dream so I plug along hoping that the path/decision will be clear - when the time comes, in this day-by-day world I now find myself in.

John Muir Trail - 2011

The John Muir Trail runs for 211 miles from Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, CA to the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the continental United States. The trail passes through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the US, including three National Parks, eight mountain passes, ranging from 9,000 to 13,000+ feet, and crosses only one road in its entire length.
