Planning / Permit Phase

Well it’s time to start preparing for this year’s JMT adventure. Last year I left the trail at Red’s Meadow on July 14th after realizing that the snow, ice, and deep water crossings in early July were just too physically demanding for me. I had not hiked with or even met my hiking partner prior to the trip. He had a permit for TM => WP and had posted that he had an opening after someone dropped out due to the snowy conditions. I had planned to hike solo and try for a walk up permit but decided to partner up given the conditions. I had mentioned that I thought the pace in his itinerary was a bit ambitious up front and did not allow time to acclimate to the altitude. I felt we could start slower and pick up speed as we went and still finish in the same number of days but He was not willing to be flexible. I was willing to give it a go, but by the time we got to Red’s Meadow I decided that I was not having any fun and told him I was going to bail. We did 10 miles the first day out of TM then 13 miles the next day going over Donahue Pass and 14 miles the 3rd day to get to Red’s . I was struggling to keep up and exhausted to the point that I was starting to stumble by the end of each day. Lessons learned for this year:

1 - Be in better shape ( last year I had abdominal surgery in late Feb and couldn’t train for 3 months)
2 - Reduce Total pack weight by 3-5 lbs (last year = 28.7 lbs before food & water
3 - Have control of the permit and itinerary, I was able to get 2 permits for a July start 1- July 8th from Lyell Canyon trailhead for a party of two. Exit date = July 27th 2- July 10th from Mirror Lake-> Snow Creek for a party of two. Exit date = Aug 1st.

So far I have been unable to find a hiking partner??
