Getting to the trail is no walk in the park!

Getting to the trail is no walk in the park!

9:00 Mike and I drove to Lee Vining from Lake Tahoe. We happened to stop there for a break and found out the bus was due at 12:15 from a helpful tourist. The Yarts bus actually runs at 12:45. While waiting for the bus we met lookforgilbert.com with swollen ankle and 45 lb pack having just completed his hike and hitchhiked to Lee Vining. Compared to our packs, both well under 20 lbs, his looked huge! We arrived at Tuolomne Meadows and left Mike's resupply box in a bear box at the suggestion of another hiker because the store "Does not hold packages for hikers". I found that odd. Needless to say, we did not patronize this establishment and went on to catch the 2:15 shuttle to Yosemite Valley stop 8 after a small delay for the bus driver to call in a stranded motorist. Running late, We had to then take the local shuttle to stop 9 just in time to walk into the wilderness permits office at 4:57, which closes at 5:00. Here we lucked out, we had our foot in the door. We got all the rules and regulations read outloud to us and got our permit. Whew!

Back on the local bus to stop 18, we walked to the backpackers camp behind the North Pines campground. After pitching our tents and a cold dinner, we crawled in our tents to hide from the mosquitos. All night flashlights walked thru my site to get to the toilets. Someone was waterproofing their tent and the wind was blowing the fumes my way. Rangers patrolled the campsite shooting at bears with rubber bullets. I heard at least 5 shots. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well.

I can't wait to get on the trail!
