ONWARD TO CRABTREE

Zach and I wake early with an eagerness to get to Crabtree Meadows, the "basecamp" location for our Whitney ascent. We both hike strong throughout the day, but a pattern begins to emerge. Zach is young and strong, especially on the uphills, and I'm pretty sure I'll be chasing him all through these mountains. No matter, I've learned on these long hikes to hike at my own pace. About mid-morning, near Rock Creek, we meet a group of 5 or 6 twenty-something female hikers from Bozeman Montana, also heading north. Afterward, I tell Zach that I'm gonna call them the "Delta Phi's" because they remind me of a sorority out on a camping trip. Later, at Crabtree Junction, upon seeing the Deltas again, I tell them the name I'd given them, I also tell them I hope they're not offended by the name, they aren't, and we all have a good laugh about it. After a bit of uncertainty, Zach and I locate Crabtree Meadows, and set up camp within shouting distance of the Ranger Station. Good thing to, because I was experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness. I went and visited the ranger, Rob, who had checked our permit earlier in the day. After hearing my symptoms - - headache, and general fatigue - - Rob recommended rest and hydration, and said if I got worse to please let him know. Rob also came to our camp a few hours later to check on me, which was appreciated. Feeling in doubt as to whether or not I should attempt Whitney in the morning, I went to bed praying that God would make it possible for me to wake up refreshed and ready for the challenge.
