Long Trail Hike "Failed"
It's been a while since my last entry, so I'll update you all.
I had a good flight up to Albany, N.Y., my shuttle drivers were there waiting on me to take me over to Vermont.
Met up with Quahog in Williamstown, MA, and my shuttle drivers offered to take us up to North Adams, MA and drop us off on the AT, thus cutting out some side trail hiking on the Pine Cobble Trail to get us to the LT.
It rained hard on us, and we knew it was coming, but with the high heat index, it felt pretty good. Arrived at Seth Warner Shelter, and had it all to oursleves. Several other hikers were tenting or in hammocks around the shelter.
Second day called for more rain, and we got it. Coming down Harmon Hill on the large stone steps in rain, is not an easy thing to do. The steps did a number on my knees. Had 1.4 miles after crossing Vt. 9 to get to Melville Nauheim Shelter.
Quahog said we had a 17 mile day for tomorrow, but my mind was made up to go back down 1.4 miles to Vt. 9 to end my hike, I was in a lot of pain.
Saw an orthopedic specialist once I got home. X-rays showed a lot of arthritis. He gave me steriod injections in both knees. Wants to hold off doing surgery for now. The injections seem to help quite a bit. I may be ready to go a head and give the AT another try next year. We'll see!
There are two options to make an impact in someone's life... One is by being mean, and the other is by being kind!
