We walked out of Long John Canyon and into the Owens valley. A chilly
morning as the cold air must have been settled in the valley. We walked
quickly on the deserted roads and into Lone Pine. Slaughter and Loveline
went to a breakfast place and I was drawn to the diet coke machine at
McDonald's. After, I walked the 1.7 miles to the ranger station to pick up
our Whitney permit and then back to town. At the ranger station I ran into
another L2H hiker, Sochi which was cool, fun to trade stories.
We all ate at the pizza place for lunch and then walked out of town around
3. These ended up being the only bad miles of the entire L2H. We had 7.5
miles on the paved Whitney Portal road which normally would be fine for me
but it being a Sunday there were actually a lot of cars and the mid day sun
was hot and the whole walk was yuck. But then we turned off on a beautiful
4 mile connector trail to Whitney Portal and the start of the day hiking
trail to Whitney. We walked through the huge campground at dark and it was
kind of a zoo, not our type of fun. We walked just past the campground and
up a slope and found 2 tiny spots that were flat enough for camping. Very
stealthy.
The Lowest-to-Highest (L2H) is a 130 mile, backcountry hiking route between Badwater and Mt. Whitney, the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere to the highest place in the contiguous United States. Learn more: www.simblissity.net/L2H.shtml
