Mogollon Rim Trail Day 0

It was a solid day of travel as we made our way to the MRT. An early
morning ride to the Detroit airport from a Heather Aunt/Uncle, a direct
flight to Phoenix, a 2 hour or so shuttle to Cottonwood (an excellent deal
for a hiker at $ 55 although it turned out for 2 of us we actually could
have taken an Uber for cheaper and more convenient), a final snack at Taco
Bell and then a short Lyft to the trailhead. We both felt pretty crappy and
Heather didn't sleep much last night with nervous energy as not only we
were going hiking but she was also closing her Dad's house down and leaving
it till the end of the year.

But we finally made it to the Jail Break trailhead which is the long way
start to the MRT. There's a dirt road way to get to the official start at
the Parson's trailhead but we didn't have a ride there and didn't see a
need to ask for such a favor from anyone we might randomly know in the area
when Brett mapped a nice 14 mile walk right from town to the start. We only
made it 4 miles having walked through Dead Horse state park, paying our
small $ 3 walk in fee and spying some cool ruins from afar at a nearby
National Monument. We were too jet lagged to walk over and visit. The
cottonwood trees along the trail laid an inch of cottonwood fluff on the
ground and it was nice to just be walking again. Especially for Heather, it
has been a year and a half since we finished the Hot Springs Trail and she
hiked due to her father's illness and passing recently.

We dodged little black streaks of rain and only got a few drops before
camping behind a couple of junipers on a plateau overlooking town.

The Mogollon Rim Trail

The Mogollon Rim Trail is a 500 mile route across Arizona primarily following the Mogollon Rim, an escarpment dividing the high Colorado plateau to the north and the subtropical desert and basin ranges to the south. This spectacular and rugged route crosses four national forests and the largest ponderosa pine forest in the worldmrt
