Lots of Water
The Usual Readiness
I'm packing the four re-supply boxes for the first leg of the Oregon Desert Trail. I also bought 14 gallons of water for the 7 water caches that I will need and will stock the caches with Renee Patrick from the Oregon Desert Association before I start hiking. I will return to Ashland at the end of the month to give the Steens Mountains time to melt out--(they are at 125% snowpack now) then return in July. Then--the Owyhee later, possibly September. Logistics are always the hardest part of the hike--especially one that has had very few hikers. Renee is doing a great job developing a water source list, town guide and maps and waypoints for the trail that are on the ONDA website. I will be using a Delorme Inreach for the first time on this trip. Setup is a little more complicated than for the SPOT, but I will be able to do 10 custom messages a month. I made the mistake of getting to Frenchglen on Memorial Day Weekend--so the hotel was totally booked since January. I was counting on getting my meals there--so had to add an extra re-supply box to go to Frenchglen to the Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort. My re-supply places: Peters Creek OHV Camp, Paisley (Sage Inn), Plush (Hart Mountain Cabins) and Frenchglen.
