Alvord Lake alkali flats

Into Fields

Walked from 0630 to 2:30--I erroneously thought the Fields Station store closed at 3PM on Sundays--but it stayed open until 5! It was a day of mud--borax alkali crust with slimy mud underneath. All kinds of mud: mud with grass, mud with alkali crust, plain mud. A storm cloud parked over Alvord Lake and I knew I was in for hours of mud slogging because the trail goes right over Alvord Lake--which is a usually a dry playa. The trail also goes through Nature Conservancy land--it was swamp walking between EB39 and EB40--I felt bad about scaring up so many birds, although it was interesting to see so many species. I felt like an intrusive presence as the birds freaked and flew away at my approach. I used the road to go south from EB40 instead of going cross country. I saw a couple birdwatching on the road and it appeared to be public access to the Nature Conservancy property. I saw the hole of very hot blue green water as you come onto the road. The weather partially cleared and it was extremely windy in between rain squalls--I had to hold the front of my trekking umbrella down so it wouldn't bend inside out. I came across an encampment of people and saw pin flags with writing all over--I found out later that they were a class studying lizards. I jammed across the last x-c to Fields--the big trees of the town were visible from far away and never seemed to get any closer. Thinking that the store closed at 3 PM on Sunday, I stocked up on beer and food. Ate an excellent meal at the cafe--a BLT with fries and ordered a cheeseburger for dinner. The motel next door was very spacious--two rooms. Perfect to be right next to the store and cafe. I definitely was looking forward to a day off. I had sent a re-supply box here and the store manager retrieved it. I also bought some Advil for my knee that I fell on a few days ago.
