Above Juniper Canyon

Juniper Canyon

I spent the last two days working with the videographers from Osprey/Keene/Ibex. They interviewed me, filmed me tying my shoes, setting up my tent, hiking along the Owyhee Rim (with a camera mounted on a drone), and fording the river next to the Warm Springs. It was my first time doing anything like this and they were all very professional. They also used a Go Pro attached to a gas can to film a dawn time lapse of my tent. I wondered what that gas can was doing so close to my tent when I got up. Jeff Fox and Dan Holz took me back to Slocum, where they were meeting a climber. I left as soon as it got light in the morning and was hoping the rain would hold off, but it started early just as I was cresting the Juniper Canyon drainage and the wind picked up. Oh well--I resigned myself to a day of rain slogging. But the rain lasted about 1 1/2 hours and I dropped down into a drainage where it was calm. Once again, animal trails saved the day. Some stretches of trail looked like a trail crew had created them. Lots of wild horses travelling here. I saw two baby mountain sheep skeletons and 1 ram skeleton with curled horns. The weather came back in after 4:30 with a thunderstorm, so I set up my tent early. Three Finger Canyon was reminiscent of sections of the Hayduke trail and would make a great day hike because there are road ends at OC 183 at the beginning of Three Finger Canyon and north at OC 190 at the end of Painted Canyon.
