Getting Ready to go to England and backpack Scotland's Great Glen Way

I have finally gotten my stuff packed to take off early tomorrow to the airport and hopefully (I am traveling standby) will make it to Boston. I will be hiking the Great Glen Way starting May 1, after visiting places in England include Stratford. The trail starts at Fort William in the highlands of Scotland and ends 73 miles later at Inverness.

My backpack and backpacking gear is stuffed into a regular size rolling luggage bag. Thank God for light weight gear! I checked and can get isobutane in Fort WIlliam for my MSR Pocket Rocket stove. I am carrying a regular size rolling carry on bag for all my "city" clothes. I decided to bring freeze dried food from the US for the hike. We intend to take at least a week to do the 73 mile trail because we want to take our time to enjoy the cultural sights--Urquhart Castle, the Museum of Clan Cameron, and do side trips like kayak on Loch Ness and climb Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the United Kingdom).

I've been monitoring the weather and am bringing clothes for wet and cold--somewhat like I packed to hike through the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington state. May and June are, surprisingly, the months with the least precipitation in the Highlands. I anticipate hiking over some snow on the way to Ben Nevis and am carrying micro spikes, but after reading trail journals for previous year May climbs, I doubt if I will have to use them. It is less than 5,000 feet high. What is more important is to watch the weather which can turn into gale force on the mountain.

Onward to the next adventure!!
