High Road Vs. Low Road

Place of the last wolf and the missing camp

We passed by the place where the last she-wolf was killed in Scotland at Altsaigh in 1850. No big predators left here now. A lot of uphill walking on forest roads through clearcuts. Above Drumnadrochit we traversed some scenic trail through pastures and creeks. Then it was rural road walking past old and new stone houses and grazing sheep.

As we made our descent into the Lewiston/Drumnadrochit valley we were wondering where the camp was that was shown on our Rucksack Reader map. The icons for camps have been in the wrong place on the map in previous days. Luckily, when we got to the main road in town we asked some kids and they directed us to Borlum Farm--just off the trail to the west on the road to Urquhart Castle. It was 5.50 pounds per person for a night. They had a coin operated shower.

The farm was mainly a horse boarding and training place that had set aside a flat grassy pasture for tent campers. The views from the pasture were nice over the Drumnadrochit Valley. Even though Kiltman was complaining about extreme tiredness, he still insisted on marching into town to buy some beer after we set up camp. We also feasted on baked potato, coleslaw and fried chicken from a small chip shop next to the market. Semi-civilized backpacking has its benefits.
