I always knew I would eventually hike again. The draw and the joy are just so hard to resist. It is going to be a couple of years though, and this hike won't be like the others. I have a few responsbilities to take care of over the next couple of years, and I'm going to need to be in very good shape. This hike will also require I do a little more planning, and go much lighter.
I've hiked all three trails and loved every single one of them for different reasons. I've experienced the beauty, pains, joy, and tribulations associated with them, and like many others, I just don't ever seem to tire of a long journey. This next hike will be more of a personal challenge. I want to see what I am capable of physically, and although it is probably not quite as much in my mid-forties as it was in my mid-twenties, I still hope I suprise myself.
I won't commit to a destination until I potentially draw close to reaching it. I just want to hike as far as my body, and all those external influences, will allow me to hike.
I will probably do some short hikes between now and then, and will test some new gear. The differences this time will be that I don't cook, go much lighter, supply as I go, and primarily use a gps with waypoints I preload on memory cards I carry with me. I will still have some maps as back-up, but only those absolutely needed. I don't want to be post office bound this time. I will also limit my gadgets to BB, GPS, and SPOT. This time the only camera I will have is the one on the BB.
As usual....I can't wait!
