A Bucket List Trek
In 2013, I read an article in Backpacker magazine with the headline of “Best Trail Party.” The way the article described the Fjällräven Classic made it seem like the event allowed you to experience the kind of trail community and culture thru-hikers experience, but without having to do a 2,000 mile thru-hike.
As I read the article, I thought to myself “Wow, I would like to do that someday!” and filed it away on my lifelong bucket list. It was something I thought I’d get to do after I retired and I’m just in my 40s, so it was quite a ways away. Heck, I’d only just gotten a passport the year prior, so I’d never been outside of North America! At one point, I casually looked into the ticket process and was a little intimidated – it was like trying to buy tickets to a hot concert -- you have to be online the minute they go on sale, or you won’t get them.
Then in the fall of 2014, I mentioned the Fjällräven Classic on my Facebook page posted a link to the Backpacker article. One of my Facebook friends from the UK – someone I’d only met once or twice in real life – said she wanted to do it and we should go for it this year. I figured this might be the only time I’d find someone adventurous enough to go backpacking with me north of the Arctic Circle for five days, so I should probably take her up on it. Her excitement about it was infectious and I didn’t want to let her down, so next thing I knew, we were making plans to get tickets.
