Lunch at Zane Grey cabin

Our longest hike

We convinced the proprietors of Black Bar Lodge to let us eat breakfast early so we could get going before the heat on our longest hiking day. I felt like death warmed over--I only got 2 hours of sleep due to the heat and not being used to sleeping in close proximity to someone else in the same room. Earplugs only blunt the snoring--you still can hear it. We made good time in the morning--6 miles in 3 cooler morning hours. Wildlfowers were out---Farewell to Spring, Self Heal, Daisies, St. John's Wort, Elegant Brodeia, Buckwheat, Pennyroyal. Bald eagles and ospreys were hunting over the river. We stopped and had lunch next to a cabin used by western writer Zane Grey and now maintained by the BLM, including a large expanse of mowed green lawn. The Levi Strauss jeans family owned the property after Zane Grey.I cruised by myself for about 1 1/2 hours after lunch, enjoying the aloneness and being able to take pictures without holding up a line of other hikers. We arrived at Marial Lodge about 4:30. Beer for sale--Coors Light and Bud, alas, but still beer. Our room was directly above a small stream, which provided comforting white noise for getting to sleep. The owners of the lodge are very friendly and walked us through the logistics of tomorrow's lunchpacking and side trip to the historic Rogue River Ranch. Dinner was abundant chicken, salad, veggies, corn pudding and rice with ice cream crunch for dessert. Sleeping was much easier tonite.
