Two Step showing off her food preparations
Finishing the preparation and packing of our trail meals
Two Step finished preparing and assembling our food today. Even for a short 10 day hike, there was a lot of work to do. She dehydrated two of our favorite meals, white chicken chili and spaghetti. Each one involved cooking a large meal from scratch and then spreading out the final product on a number of plastic sheets that lie on trays and go into our large dehydrator. The sound of the fan and the warm air flowing out of the dehydrator was constantly in the background for the better part of a week.
Then there are the prepared meals. Examples include mashed potatoes with gravy and chicken or roast beef, stuffing with turkey and gravy, and the old reliable, ramen noodles with meat and vegetables added.
All these meals go in a freezer bag where all we ever do is add boiling water and let it steep. No preparation in the field, no cleanup required.
Of course there are also the breakfasts of oatmeal, granola with Nido (full fat dehydrated milk), nuts with raisins and dark chocolate M&M's - also called Good Old Raisins and Peanuts - or GORP, and various bars and dried fruit. Oh yes, bacon jerky is also a favorite.
All this gets assembled in daily packages, and put into Ursack minor pest resistant sacks, or into our Bearikade bear canister for storage in our car for our resupply.
Lots of work - but much easier than a 150 day thru-hike.
