Day 2

Woke to rain this morning. It wasn't raining that hard so I didn't get too wet packing up but it had been raining long enough that tent was wet. I had stayed dry along with the stuff inside my tent but my pack had been in the vestibule and that part of the fly doesn't appear to be waterproof anymore. Will need to look into that when I get home. I left camp shortly after Laura and Phil, at 7:45. The trail was overgrown wet grass for the most part. Not great. Also large muddy sections that threatened to suction my shoes. There was a portion of the road walk that was flooded to mid calf so I just walked in my flip flops. Took a nice long break at lunch to let my shoes and tent dry. The mosquitoes haven't been quite as insufferable but still pretty annoying. The leggings aren't stopping me from getting bitten; just preventing me from itching them as much. Will need more bug spray when I resupply. The sky cleared in the afternoon and I had nice views out to the lake during a portion Ina ridge. I couldn't decide where to stay. The site I'm currently at said it didn't have water so it was looking like I'd have to go another 8 miles or so into the state park and pay for a site there. But about 100 yards north of the camp was a little brook that worked. I could have done a few more but wasn't quite ready for over 20. Saw one guy backpacking north just after lunch and that's been it for people today. Got to this campsite at 3pm and guessing I'll have it to myself. I think there are aspen trees - their leaves "quake" so all the shadows are shimmering, looks neat. Braless was definitely the way to go. Think I need to be drinking more water though. It hasn't been that hot so I keep forgetting. Need to look at the guide tonight and figure out when to go into Grand Marais. I keep thinking about how pre-AT me would have kept hiking yesterday to avoid talking to strangers and I'm really really glad that I'm now comfortable with that. Had a really nice evening because of it. It's seven now and no one else has shown up. I made myself a little fire using birch bark starter. Not enough dry medium wood to keep it going, but was glad I could make something. Hadn't bear bagged in awhile either but that went fine too. My food so far is so so. I put too much water in the mushroom burgundy yesterday and it needed salt. The four pepper chili is a little spicy and one of the beans didn't rehydrate that well. Nutritional yeast helped. I already don't want probars. Guess those are off the menu for awhile.
