Perfect Kiva

Bullet Canyon

Bullet Canyon was easier to navigate than we expected after reading an older description of the hike. It can be choked with vegetation but there was a well worn path to follow. The hike gives a decent workout with gigantic boulders and some slick rock to navigate as well as sand to walk in.
We happened to notice some unlisted but faded rock art and a ruin on the rim at the beginning of the hike that was a nice surprise. Otherwise, the main event is at the turnaround point for a dayhike visiting Perfect Kiva and Jailhouse Ruin. Both were wonderful sites but Perfect Kiva really was impressive. The Kiva is hewn out of the rock itself with only the roof built (no bricked walls). There are several other rooms and ancient trash like potsherds and corn cobs. Jailhouse ruin is named for the barred window and has unusual white pictographs above it.
Bullet Canyon is interesting in its own right so the ancient sites are a bonus. The day was blessedly warm and pleasant. We only saw three dayhikers but a lot of backpackers and all who we spoke to were on multi night trips.
