Pacific Crest Trail Map
This journal is a small glimpse into the day-to-day of planning and executing a PCT thru-hike!
First, a small introduction...
Caitlin, a sophomore at UC Davis majoring in Wildlife and Conservation Biology. She also hopes to minor in English, and in between find time to dance, read, hike, play racquetball, decorate her apartment, etc. After college, she plans to work as a park ranger and then potentially pursue a graduate degree in biology or genetics.
George, a senior at UC Santa Cruz majoring in Math and Computer Science. When he's not working his butt off doing homework, he enjoys mountain biking, writing poetry, hiking, photography and playing Ultimate Frisbee. When he graduates from UCSC, he plans to get his MBA and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cal and then start his own business doing Artificial Intelligence work.
The Pacific Crest Traill, or PCT, runs 2650+ miles from Mexico to Canda. It passes through 24 national forests, 7 national parks, 5 CA state parks and 5 BLM resource areas, as well as through other public and private lands. The PCT has the greatest elevation change of any of the US's National Scenic Trails, with a low point of 140 ft and a high of 13,200 ft. It passes through 6 of North America's 7 ecozones, including deserts, old-growth and temperate rainforests, and artic-alpine areas. Hiking it takes about 5 months, and is truly the adventure of a lifetime!
We will both be taking Spring Quarter 2007 off, hoping to start from the Mexican border on April 19th, 2007. Our end date will be sometime in mid to late September. Caitlin's mother, Kathy, has generously volunteered to keep this journal updated during our adventure, so check back often! Until then, we will be updating it with pre-hike food and gear lists, progress, thoughts...
Thanks to our family and friends for the constant support and love. We couldn't do it without you! Please comment in our guestbook to let us know you visited. and anytime you want to hear about the trail, we love talking about it!
