Breakfast with Ken and Jane

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day! Another total chill day in PCT-land...Ken and Jane picked us up from our hotel pretty early and we all went out for breakfast down by the lake. We went to a waffle shop and it was AMAZING. I ordered an a la mode Belgian waffle. When it came out, I was blown away - it was ice cream sandwich-style, with a 2 inch slab of chocolate ice cream between the waffle halves. It was topped (aka completely covered) with whipped cream, raspberry sauce and fresh strawberries. was unbelievable! Also, since it was Mother's Day, Jane and I got complementary Belgian Sunrises - pineapple juice, orange juice, and grenadine. They were a little sweet for my taste, but so beautiful! After a leisurely meal, they dropped us back on the trail. It was such a wonderful visit!

Once back on the trail, we set off the 9.4 miles to Deep Creek Hot Springs. Part of the way there, we ran into Meadow Ed. He was out on the trail putting up a memorial for No Way Ray, a thru-hiker who died tragically in this area last year. We reached the hot springs around 2pm and boy, were they awesome! There were several hot pools, a hot shower and the very cool creek in which to play. We spent the afternoon rotating between the pools and generally hanging out. There are tons of people kicking it here - Troll and Oblivious, Geek, Apple Pie, RoSham, Grimace, Bounty, Filthy Figaro, Speedstick, Craig (who's Sunwalker now), Junk Food and Amir, Scatman, Numtum and others whose names I didn't catch. It was super fun hanging out with them all. A couple of trail angels had packed in cold beers and hot dogs. All the old AT hikers were telling stories about past hikes - the best was Geek, who hiked the AT in 1990 with a cat who rode on top of his backpack! We had originally intended to only stay at the hot springs for a few hours and get some more hiking in this evening, but it never happened. Oh well, there's always tomorrow!
