Cruising the Mojave Dam
Wishing for an Ice Cream Truck
We hiked 22 miles today from Deep Creek Hot Springs to Cleghorn Picnic Area near Silverwood Lake. It was a very nice day, though hot. We spent the morning cruising along above Deep Creek. We crossed over on a really neat bridge with tons of swallows nesting under it. At the end of the creek, we walked for about 1/2 a mile on top of the Mojave Dam. Lots of views from the top! We had lunch and a siesta at Grass Valley Creek for several hours during the heat of the day - an excellent idea. I got a chance to read my book for awhile, which was really nice. Once it had cooled down a bit, we hiked onward across a corner of the Mojave Desert and along Highway 173. The trail then proceeded up and over Cedar Springs Dam. George thought he heard an ice cream truck part way up and left his pack to look for it, but no luck :-( Once over the hill containing the dam, we dropped down to the shore of Silverwood Lake and meandered along its edge for several miles. We took a break on a tiny beach, from which we could see a boat-in picnic area! Pretty nifty. We eventually made it around to Cleghorn Picnic Area, where we are camping with Scatman, Craig, Troll and Oblivious, and Apple Pie. There are flush toilets and running water here - what a treat!
