Chair Lift Time
Getting to Wrightwood
Man, today kicked my butt. The first 16 miles or so were up, up, up, hot and completely waterless. We seemed to be always on the side of the mountain facing the sun and there was no shade to speak of. I was completely dead by about lunchtime. The views were amazing but the heat was really draining. We took a nice long lunch break, followed immediately by another break to talk to Squatch, who wanted to hear our laundry story. Then we packed up for real and continued on up the hill. About 2:30pm, we caught up with Craig and Scatman, and hiked with them for 3 miles or so to Guffy Campground, where we were finally able to get water. The miles following the campground were pretty nice - shady and cool, gently downhill, all around a vast improvement from the morning! Our route went through a ski resort and we got to play on the non-operational chair lift. That was pretty awesome. We got picked up by a trail angel (Carol) at the Inspiration Point parking area on Highway 2, after 22 miles of hiking. George, Craig and I got to ride in the bed of her 1950's truck which was quite entertaining. She dropped us off at the local pizza place, where we ate and ate and ate. Nutz and Fruitcake were there too, and we saw Troll outside. After dinner, we got picked up by another trail angel, Colleen, who is letting us stay with her. The four of us are kicking it in an attic/loft area, taking turns with the shower, Internet and phone. She seems really nice - she's even offered to do our laundry in the morning! She's got two adorable kids and tons of animals - dogs, cats, chickens, and a horse! It's pretty sweet. Tomorrow's plans are Post Office, shopping and the library, then back on the trail around noon.
