Post Office Resupply

Over Mt. Baden-Powell

Our trail angel made us breakfast! It was so sweet. After eating, we did our laundry, then repacked and walked into town to the post office. Once again, picking up resupply boxes was very exciting. I got TWO letters from Krista, in addition to chocolate malt balls, socks, newspaper clippings, and banana chocolate chip muffins! Mmmmmm.... After packing everything away, we went and got cinnamon rolls from the local bakery and an awesome ice cream sundae. We ate the sundae speedily, then checked our email at the library and printed off an updated water report. Carol picked up Craig, Scatman, Neptune, Mr. Fusion and George and I and took us back to the trailhead. It was pretty hot, being ~ noon, so we kicked it in the parking lot for awhile and ate our cinnamon buns. Around 1:15pm , we set off toward Mt. Baden-Powell. We met up with Craig and Scatman a mile in, at the faucet at Grassy Hollow Visitor Center. From there, the four of us cruised on over to Vincent Gap, covering 3.5 miles in just over an hour. A little before 3pm we started our ascent of Baden-Powell. At 9300 feet, it was our highest point thus far. The climb was intense - 2800 feet of gain in 4 miles. Switchbacks all the way up. Luckily it was a really pleasant trail - the tread was soft and duffy, there were lodgepole and Jeffrey pines shading the path, and the views were unbelievable! We made it to the summit around 5pm and took lots of photos. Then back down the other side! We fortunately didn't have to go all 2800 feet down, but it was pretty steep. We descended into a saddle, then climbed Throop Peak. Another descent and some traversing (again with beautiful views) brought us to a trail junction with Mt. Hawkins Ridge Trail. We continued past that to Windy Gap and then down to Little Jimmy Spring. We got water and went 1/4 mile further to Little Jimmy Trail Camp, our sleeping spot for the night. Already there were Fester, Troll and Oblivious, Max and Wounded Knee. Luckily it's a pretty big campground! ~15 miles today.
