Frog Detour
We were the last to leave this morning, as usual. We started off at a good clip however, and made it to the base of Mt. Williamson at Islip Saddle in no time. Climbing the mountain took awhile however - 1300 feet in 1.6 miles. More great views from the ascending trail. Once we reached the crest, we headed down the other side without a pause. A few miles further on, the PCT was closed to protect a native frog. This resulted in an unfortunate 3 mile road walk on Highway 2. They were repaving the road a few miles up from where we were, so there was a lot of truck traffic whizzing by, At one point, Craig (who was just behind us) decided to do a road run instead of walk and quickly passed us as a result. We caught up with him, Troll and Oblivious at Buckhorn Campground, where we had lunch and a nap. After a long break we continued for a few more miles on the detour and met back up with the PCT at Little Rock Creek. We then had a nice, shady ascent up to Cooper Canyon Trail Camp, where we got water. Then up some more to Cloud Burst Summit. It was at 7018 feet. From there we finally got to go down. We walked along and listened to Shania Twain, which was pretty fun. After a few miles, we reached Glenwood, a boy scout camp at mile 400.7. We set up camp by some picnic tables. We made Paul's four person cheesecake and ate it all. 520 calories and a pound of cheesecake per person! While we were cleaning, a troop of boy scouts arrived. Luckily, they were fine with us staying, so we didn't have to move on. Mr. Fusion just showed up and is staying here as well. We got into camp early so I got a chance to start a letter to Krista. I have so many people I owe letters to - Krista, Sylvi, Cynthia, M and D, Kels, Stephen, George's grandparents, Aunt Sheila...there just hasn't been time to write! Hopefully, I will get caught up while at the Saufley's.
