Blue Sky Along the CA Aqueduct

Trail Magic Galore!

We seem to alternate between long days and short days - today we only did 16 miles. It was a tiring 16 though. We spent it walking along/on top of the CA aqueduct, which sounds pleasant but isn't. The LA water board has cemented over the flowing river, so there're no opportunities to enjoy the water. You can't even LOOK at it! It's basically a 16 mile road walk on dirt and cement - not exactly ideal. There's no shade, it's really dry, and there are tons of ATVs and dirt bikes that kick up enormous dust clouds. We left at 5am to beat the heat, but still ended up taking a sizable break around 9am. It was soooo hot! We sat for awhile in the shade (minimal) of a Joshua tree. This tree wasn't too friendly - it poked holes in two of my platypus water containers! Luckily George had an extra, so I didn't die. Eventually we made it to Cottonwood Creek bridge, which unfortunately didn't have flowing water, but did have a cache. Nutz, Fruitcake, Hammer, Diesel, Old Corpus, and Radar were all here, taking a break. About an hour after we arrived, we experienced our first trail magic of the day. A couple that Nutz and Fruitcake had chatted up earlier in the day showed up, bringing bananas, olives, tomatoes, chips, hardboiled eggs, and half a watermelon! Meadow Ed arrived with cookies, candy, fresh berries and beer. Then a former section hiker came with candy, fruit and pastries! We ate soooo well. Everyone else left to hike more ~ 5pm, but George and I are staying here tonight!
